Sol Duc Summer Run Steelhead

August 24, 2010

August has been great so far for Summer runs. These Olympic Peninsula summer steelhead are strong hard fighting steelhead that don't give up easy. Bobber dogging and bobber jig methods have been the ticket when it comes to low water for summer steelhead. The water is finely getting down to summer lows so go small and light on the leaders especially in the Sol Duc. Fluorocarbon in eight lb has been working the best in the low water. Flyfishing has been very affective with the low clear water. Yesterday we hooked 3 on the fly including a nice 22lb king. This is also the time for our Summer Silvers .

The Summer Silvers are in the Duc. We had good push with the recent rains which sent 2 t0 3 hundred fish up in the hatchery run. Small spinners or jigs with sand shrimp have been working the best. These are hatchery fish that are fun to catch and even better to eat.

If you want to join me on the Olympic Peninsula for some beautiful scenery and some hot summer run action pleases give me a call. Now booking Fall kings and Silvers on the Olympic Peninsula + Searun Cutthroat flyfishing Trips.

If you are looking for a great little fishery here on the Olympic Peninsula try the Sol Duc Sockeye. Size for size they are the best fighting salmon that swims and they taste even better. July is the best time to chase these sockeyes with either light spinning gear or fly gear. Small pink jigs or flys have been working the best. Bobber and jigs have been the ticket tipped with sand shrimp.

Yesterday we had a great day landed 6 sockeyes and two summer steelhead. See pics on Steelhead University.

Summer silvers are also showing up in the Duc. These Chromers are hatchery fish that average around 8lb. Small jigs and spinners in blue or black seem to produce the best.

The Hoh is producing some wild summer Chinook and a summer run or two. Cooler days seem to be better do to the lower water levels. Fish k-15 in all of the deeper slots and orange body vibrexs in number 4 for the summer runs.

If you want to have a great time here on the Olympic Peninsula and catch some fish give me a call. (360-640-8109)
